Sketch Outing NBA Finals

Join us Saturday, June 6th, 2015 from 10am-Noon at the Q Arena to sketch how the arena will be decked out for the NBA Finals.
We will meet at the overhang pictured above (right under the giant "C") at the intersection of Ontaria, Prospect, and Huron.  We will hold this sketch outing in the event of a little rain, as we can sketch from under the overhang.  In the event of major rain, please watch us on Facebook or on our blog to see what the plan will be.

Eight years ago, I had wanted to sketch the NBA Finals displays/decorations, but I lost track of time, and before I knew it, it was over.  I missed out.  Don't miss out this time around.  Come and sketch with us, on June 6th.

Keep in mind, this is a Saturday, and it is earlier in the day than normal.  We're not going to sketch on the Sunday, as parking will probably be very expensive due to the Cavs game that night.  And, we're going earlier on Sunday to avoid parking issues that will come closer to the Indians' game.

There should be a lot of available parking within a few blocks of the arena, and of course, RTA is always an option, as this is only a couple of blocks from Public Square.  Paid parking garages will be available as well, including Tower City's and the casino's.

Please feel free to post a comment with any questions here or post a question on our Facebook page.  Not in our Facebook group?  Feel free to join!  We're at "Urban Sketchers Cleveland" on Facebook.

Have a great day, looking forward to seeing you!

Cleveland Public Library

This sketch crawl was the most URBAN of all! We had 2 panhandlers hitting us up for money, bridal parties coming out of the Hyatt, smelly bus exhaust and the roar of the Blue Angels overheard.

5th Street Arcade (old Euclid Arcade)

Here's my attempt at the old fashioned staircase, near Euclid. The angles and perspective were a challenge. Really enjoyed the outing and drawing with our group of awesome sketchers.

Sunday Sketch Outing

It was great seeing so many sketcher friends, old and new, out Saturday morning.  I had planned to sketch the Terminal Tower, but after a couple of attempts, I changed my mind and drew the buildings at the southern end of East 4th.  It was a great morning, and the rain held off until we were all pretty much done for the morning.

Bottle Car in Steelyard

This is an old bottle car from the days of the steelyard, before Steelyard Commons shopping center.  I draw down there on occassion, because there's a lot of these types of things down there, and it's very close to where I live.  So, I can pop down there whenever I have just a little bit of time.  I also find there is a wide variety of things to sketch.

As I wrote in the journal page, there was a lot of controversy when they'd built Steelyard Commons, with it's Wal-mart, Home Depot, Target, Old Navy, and such.  This piece of land was the home to steel manufacturing that had closed down over the years.  People were upset, because essentially, stores that sold cheap foreign made items were moving onto land where people had lost their jobs in large part to cheap foreign made items.

Now, you hardly know that there was a controversy.  People are down there shopping all of the time.

Cleveland Botanical Garden

The roof was a bit of a challenge, because of all of the unique and unexpected angles to the glass panels.  It was a nice morning before a lot of activity started up around the Botanical Garden, Museum, Natural History Museum, and Western Reserve Museum.  Just had a few joggers and a couple dog walkers pass by that morning.  I am probably going to give this another try in the future, maybe even from another angle.  It might be one of those things that I try to draw over and over and over, trying to perfect it.
