Sketch Outing NBA Finals

Join us Saturday, June 6th, 2015 from 10am-Noon at the Q Arena to sketch how the arena will be decked out for the NBA Finals.
We will meet at the overhang pictured above (right under the giant "C") at the intersection of Ontaria, Prospect, and Huron.  We will hold this sketch outing in the event of a little rain, as we can sketch from under the overhang.  In the event of major rain, please watch us on Facebook or on our blog to see what the plan will be.

Eight years ago, I had wanted to sketch the NBA Finals displays/decorations, but I lost track of time, and before I knew it, it was over.  I missed out.  Don't miss out this time around.  Come and sketch with us, on June 6th.

Keep in mind, this is a Saturday, and it is earlier in the day than normal.  We're not going to sketch on the Sunday, as parking will probably be very expensive due to the Cavs game that night.  And, we're going earlier on Sunday to avoid parking issues that will come closer to the Indians' game.

There should be a lot of available parking within a few blocks of the arena, and of course, RTA is always an option, as this is only a couple of blocks from Public Square.  Paid parking garages will be available as well, including Tower City's and the casino's.

Please feel free to post a comment with any questions here or post a question on our Facebook page.  Not in our Facebook group?  Feel free to join!  We're at "Urban Sketchers Cleveland" on Facebook.

Have a great day, looking forward to seeing you!

November Sketch Outing

Join us on Sunday, November 30th from 2pm-4pm at the Rockefeller Greenhouse.  The weather outside might be frightening, but inside the greenhouse, it will be nice and cozy.  There is plenty of free parking, but there is limited seating inside, please feel free to bring a stool.  But, as always, be considerate of those who are walking around to visit this great space.

You can find the greenhouse just east of the Cultural Gardens and just south of 90.  The address is:  750 East 88th, Cleveland, OH.

We hope you can make it!

West 14th

I've been wanting to draw this house on West 14th for some time.  I did this for the woman who lives there.  I just sent it off to her, and I hope that she likes it.  It's an absolutely spectacular sight that I get to see on a regular basis.

GardenWalk Cleveland 2013

A few of us met out on Clinton Ave for the GardenWalk Cleveland 2013.  This was part of the Detroit Shoreway district, and it featured many beautifully restored houses to visit.  The owner of this particular house had pictures of what the house had looked like before she'd fixed it up.  It was so nice to see someone that had the vision to save such a wonderful house.  She had drinks for visitors who happened into her backyard during the walk.  She even had a great vegetable patch behind her garage.  There were also houses that had chickens.  And, one house's entire backyard was a miniature railroad set up. . . . with a lot of dinosaurs!

Sketchcrawl at Historic Kirtland Village

Joined other sketchers for the Historic Kirtland Village sketchrawl.  It was a great morning, very mild with a little breeze, and not many bugs around.  The Mormons founded this village almost 200 years ago, and more recently, they have restored the buildings and offered up tours.  The tours ran very consistently throughout the morning.  I must have seen 6 or 7 pass by, with the later morning tours getting larger in size.

I stayed outside, as the only way to get into the store and some of the other buildings was to be on the tour.  Another lady drew in the sawmill, which was very interesting with a great woodshop inside.

This building was to process "hot ash."  One of the other sketchers asked the tour guide that had passed by what that was, and she was told that it was for the production of fertilizer and ceramics.

Eggshelland

It was a chilly morning, and a few hearty souls gathered at Eggshelland. I lasted about 40 minutes, before I had to head back to my car and crank up the heat. It was a good day to sketch, otherwise, though. No snow, right?

We had to strike to capture the Eggshelland display, though, because it's only up for about 2 weeks. This year's theme, which is not evident from the sketch, was Old Friends and New. There were several clusters of characters. The first was the critics from the Muppets, and then a cluster that had Miss Piggy, Fozzi, Gonzo, Kermit, Beaker, and Animal, and the last new cluster was Mario and Luigi of Nintendo fame.

Several of their yearly characters, a chick, bunny, and such, were laying on the ground instead of propped up by the big tree. They looked a little weathered, probably from the severe wind we'd had. The only one standing up was the owl that you see in my sketch.

A great little gem in a residential neighborhood. I'd passed this little street for ages, before I turned down and found this cutie. It hasn't been opened for years, but it still looks well-maintained.

Eggshelland Sketchcrawl Event

Friday, April 6, 2012
10am-Noon
1031 Linden Lane
Lyndhurst, OH
Sketchers, Photographers, and Journalers of all skill levels welcomed
Sketching Stools allowed (but staning is recommended for best view)
Join us for a great sketching opportunity at Eggshelland in Lyndhurst, OH.
The house is located in a cul-de-sac not far from Richmond Mall. Ron & Betty Manolio of Lyndhurst has been creating Eggshelland since 1957. What began as 750 hand painting eggshells has turned into a display of over 40,000. The couple spends all year planning on graph paper and painting any more eggs that they may need.
Just some more notes: This is a residential neighborhood, so please keep the neighbors in mind when you pick your parking space. Also, it would be very considerate to take a further away parking spot and leave the close ones for families that are visiting with small children. Also, we're going to be there a lot longer than the average visitor.
Stools are allowed, but you will get your best view by standing.

Sur La Table Sketchcrawl

This is from last night's sketchcrawl in the kitchen at Sur La Table. Lately, I've been focusing on doing lettering, and I think I got the sign pretty close. The kitchen had a lot of things in it, and I also wanted to draw the mixer and neat scale that was out, but I ran out of time.

Sketchcrawl Trinity Cathedral

The Percolated Ink sketchcrawl will meet monthly with the February sketchcrawl taking place at Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland.

Trinity Cathedrawl was built (beginning) in 1890 and is listed in the National Historic Registry. The building was designed in the English Perpendicular Gothic style, in a cruciform layout, with a square central tower at the front of the building. The cathedral is the central home for the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, which encompasses approximately 24,000 members across Northern Ohio, and it's also the seat of Ohio's Episcopal Bishop.

The building is absolutely gorgeous, and it has a lot of interesting features to draw.

We will be in the main space and will meet at the back of the church at 10am. We can split off to draw and then meet back up again at 11:45am to do a quick show and tell.

Next week there will be a phone number to call, in case you get there and can't immediately locate us. Please respond to this email if you will need the phone number. I'll be wearing a red turtlenec, so I can be easily spotted. The website is at http://percolatedink.livejournal.com/ .

The address for Trinity is 2230 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH 44115. There is free parking in the back of the building, or it can be reached via the RTA Healthline.

I look forward to seeing you there, and if you have any questions in the meantime, please email percolatedinkATgmailDOTcom (just like the domain name and typical google address)

Art Supply Store

As every good location sketcher needs, here is my favorite art supply store. It's at the Greens of Lyndhurst on Mayfield Road near Brainard. I pick up a lot of stuff there, markers, paints, brushes, paper, pencils, erasers, and more. Because it's on my way to work, I stop there far too often! :D

New Year's Day Sketchcrawl

Spent the first day of the New Year drawing at Beachwood Mall with Mina, Karen, and Noreen. We drew at center court for a while, and then Mina and I drew under stairs to the rear of the Santa Claus chair. Even though the mall was a little busy, we were pretty much undisturbed. Though, we kept joking that the mall security guards were watching us.

Before I left, I stopped at Lush and bought some soap from their annual buy 1 get 1 free sale.

Marie's Restaurant

I couldn't make it to the sketchcrawl at Tower City on Saturday, so I managed to get this sketch done Friday before work.

Idea Center at Playhouse Square

This is the Idea Center on Euclid Avenue near Playhouse Square. It houses our PBS station, and although it is a minor part in this sketch, has a really cool sign along the left side of the building. I went Sunday afternoon to draw this building and to listen to the jets fly overhead from the air show, and I didn't realize how interesting the buildings facade really is until I sat and started to draw it. Was a lot of fun, though I probably didn't capture the best news on the scrolling thing above the bottom windows. Not a lot of activity going on around this area this morning, but I got the sketch in before it started to rain again.

Avengers' Movie Set

Sunday morning was overcast, but the rain held off long enough for four of us to get some quality sketching time in. There wasn't much going on at this end of the movie set, but we can always find plenty to draw. We did hear one gunshot much further up East 9th, and we saw lots of workmen searching through the pile o' debris. They seemed to be looking for mangled street grates. Security guards came and went. One guard looked like he was sitting (or sleeping) in a recliner.

Later in the morning, people started to show up for the Indians' game, and we were treated to a man across the street yelling, "Tickets!" for the better part of an hour. We stayed until we couldn't take the smell of french fries behind us at Panini's any longer. Instead of getting that, we went over to Li Wah and had dim sum. One of our favorite things to do on a Sunday!

I'll post another sketchcrawl in a couple of weeks. We should have time for a few more before the weather gets cold. It usually stays nice and hot well into October.

Sketchcrawl at the Movie Set

Please join us at a Sketchcrawl at the Avengers' movie set. We are going to meet at the Charter One Bank on Superior at East 12th (1215 Superior Ave, Cleveland, OH for your GPS/Mapquesting). There is a lot of street parking around there. Meet at 9am. If you are coming later, send an email to lostinwonderart@aol.com, and I will give you a phone number to text when you get there to find our whereabouts. We'll look to draw for about 2-3 hours, depending on how interesting we find the location.

The posted schedule for shooting puts them on Walnut Ave, which is only about a block or two away from our meeting spot. If by chance the schedule is off, we will be going over to East 9th.

Watch here for weather-related updates.

If you would like to be a contributor to the Cleveland Urban Sketchers blog, please also email lostinwonderart@aol.com. We would love to have a lot of drawings posted next week from the movie set.
